about

13 further tasty treats from Bury St Edmunds, Rock City... including free download of This Was The Sound Of Sugar Town, a 20-track retrospective of the Bury St Edmunds DIY music scene spanning a quarter of a century.

The first installment of ‘This Is The Sound of Sugar Town’ was released 20 months ago to (charitably) cash in on a new wave of optimism and excitement in a town that, until relatively recently, had lacked either. Historically a hotbed of middle-class Conservatism, National Front activism, tribal prejudice and casual weekend violence, the once-lively nightlife of Bury St Edmunds (three-time winner of Britain in Bloom and a self-proclaimed “Jewel in the Crown of Suffolk”) was dealt a fatal blow in 1978 when The Clash’s legendary ‘Out On Parole’ tour reached its frenzied conclusion at the town’s Corn Exchange. Depending on who you believe, there either was or wasn’t a riot at the evening’s climax: pints were upended, windows and faces were enthusiastically smashed, and Abbeygate Street ran thick with the blood and urine of adrenalized yokels. Fearing for the town’s moral standing in the age of this new-fangled “punk rock”, St Edmundsbury Borough Council took the kneejerk decision to ban all live music in Bury St Edmunds, for twenty long years.

Fast forward to 2017 and every fucker’s in a band. The town’s modest DIY infrastructure (two venues and a tiny person’s handful of promoters) sags and groans under the sheer number of people wanting to play. Gigs fizzle with the energy of unity and possibility, with the shared realisation that life can be sweet, that good things can happen, that we don’t have to be awful to each other to make something of our lives. Because make no mistake: In 2017, as small-minded, short-sighted, gleefully callous bigotry eats away at the collectively-held moral certainties we once took for granted, and the UK self-harms its way backwards into a maelstrom of grim isolationism at the behest of grandstanding sociopaths and the non-human tabloid press, bringing people together by any positive means is a powerful political statement.

What’s happening in Bury St Edmunds could and should happen everywhere. No matter how isolated and despondent you may feel, there are other people, maybe closer than you think, who feel as bored of boredom and who burn with a hate for the hatred as you do. You need to stand up, and see who stands with you. YOU can set the example. YOU can start the movement. YOU can be the difference that this country sorely needs.

Nothing happens in a vacuum, sweetheart. That’s the same air we’re all breathing.
